...are just better left alone. Why bother with all of these changes? What's better? Now all I see are posts from October. I know. Give it some time. But for what benefit?

If the old posts come up just hit refresh.

I'm really shocked at some of the whinging here (although I know I shouldn't be). It's as if people think they have a right to have this website the way they want it, as if it's some government service they are entitled to or something.

Constructive criticism is fine, but nobody owes you a particular font color.

Change is always difficult. But give it some time and hopefully you will adapt.

When the admin announced that changes were being made, they also asked people to wait a week before complaining. It might be nice if we honored that, given the time and effort it's surely taken to implement the changes. I'm more than willing to give the new board a chance, and to give the admin a chance to work out the inevitable bugs. Especially when they did try to give us fair warning and asked us nicely to give things a bit of time.

In reply to: re: Some things... - Chromolume 11:11 pm EST 12/22/15

I would have hoped that the web developers for the site would have posted a way for users to post the inevitable bugs, especially since there are so many iterations for browsers, OS, etc.

I am running Mac OS Yosemite. For both Chrome 47.0.2526.106 and Safari 9.0.2 (10601.3.9) the default font for un-visited URLs is a very thick bold which is hard to read. But then, if I visit the same page, those un-read links are regular font.

The text for this post is again a bold font which is hard to read.

And the color for the URLs is a web-safe 0000ff (blue). Web-safe colors are totally unnecessary in this day an age. But even if the web designers insist on web-safe colors, many sites I have worked on use 0099cc which is much more subtle.

It's not that the site is different. It's that the weight and colors of the fonts SCREAM at you

I see that the webmaster has posted that note. But while he/she did provide a web address, no where in the note does he/she ask for feedback via email or anything else.

And a true beta report is not done by a flurry of email with no structure for reporting OS, browsers, etc.

As someone who has taken part in well over a hundred beta tests since 1994, I know what a beta test is.

As has already been pointed out, they could not have been more clear that they were asking for feedback/bug reports via email.

Maybe you could volunteer your time to be part of a beta test. Or offer to pay for it.

Would love to be part of a beta test.

But if you know anything about beta tests, people are not paid to participate. They volunteer.

The webmaster of ATC could have designed a real beta test.

And I would certainly volunteer to create a form that would cover all the bases.

If the webmaster contacts me I will help

"other bugs/things that don't work write can be reported to webmaster@talkinbroadway.com"

I'm not sure how it could be any more plain. I don't think there is a huge team working on this project so it's a bit silly to expect this to go through a full beta test. If you see something that isn't working next week, let them know.

It's actually nothing at all like the Wizard of Oz. I've tried changing it the font color several times on Firefox. But guess what? It hasn't worked. It doesn't appear as though I have the power afterall.

If it is not working, then you are not changing it correctly. It works on my firefox (which, at the moment, seems to have fewer bugs with the page than Chrome). My guess is that you are changing the color but not changing the setting that tells firefox to override the page based attributes.

I don't use Firefox. I use Chrome and Safari. There are no default settings in either of those Mac Browsers to change colors.

I am happy you can change your colors. But I can't. And I suspect many others can't.

But a true web developer will have several machines, Mac with different OS versions, Windows with different OS versions, as well as at least three different browsers installed. And of course there are all the various tablet iterations that need to be tested.

If this sounds like a like of equipment and testing, it is! That's one of the disadvantages of the web. Fonts, layouts, colors, spacing, frames, and links all vary.

You're making the common mistake that many visitors to web pages make. YOUR system works fine. But there are many, many other setups where it doesn't.

This is why most web developers put out a soft launch with a way for viewers to post bugs.

I haven't found the bug reporting link for ATC.

That's the real problem; not the choice of fonts and colors.

First of all, there have been many messages asking people to email feedback (e.g., bug reports) to webmaster@talkinbroadway.com. If you need a link, here: webmaster@talkinbroadway.com.

Secondly, I installed the Stylist extension for Chrome and used it to change the visited/not visited link colors for this site only (you can change it globally, but I only needed it for this site). It's not the most elegant tool, but it was pretty damn easy, with lots of detailed instructions available online. I recommend it.

Would you please point me to the post where the webmaster actually asked for bug reports.

I'm rather old and can't figure out how to find it. (You young people are much better at using the web than I am.)

And I hope that the bug reporting form includes OS, browsers, etc or all the complaining is for naught.

One bit of feedback I sent was that not everyone has the ability to change their browser settings or add extensions if they're using a work machine that is governed by global settings. I suspect that is the case for a lot of people.

A true web developer does not rely on visitors having to add extensions to their defaults.

I agree--I suspect some of the grumbling simply has to do with the amount of "comfort" ATC provides its users, and a mild sense of either panic or irritation at not being able to follow the old simple pathways, I have sorta figured out how to avoid the "October" posting I sometimes hit, but have a momentary clutch when I hit it. But these kinds of glitches are just part of the process--I'm glad the site didn't simply have to close down for a week (though would have understood if it had)!
