His appearance on Colbert last week, which I just watched, was fantastic. He often turns me off as a performer with his over-the-top energy, but in this case, his almost desperate plea for reason and mercy in a violent world was stunning and extremely moving.

It seems that he has made some kind of private peace with what some colleagues of mine in mental health activism would call his "neuroqueerness" and seems more articulate and focused. I don't want to do armchair diagnosis (not trained as a diagnostician), but his over-the-top energy always has seemed to me to verge on a kind of "mania." As an actor, his work in recent years on "Homeland" has been as a good as anything currently on TV.

I so admire him for walking away from the creepy Criminal Minds after a season, and boy, did that decision work out well for him.

Whatever his personality, his performance as Georges. Seurat in SUNDAY IN THE PARK was up there with Kiley's Quixote and Harris' APPLE TREE. Definitive and inspirational.
