| Songs from Broadway about New Year's Eve? | |
| Posted by: | Belter 10:59 pm EST 12/21/15 |
| I have a singing gig on NYE; would like to do songs about NYE from Broadway shows, but American Standards would work as would movie songs. All I can find, thus far, is "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" ... Bells, New, Starting, Beginning, etc. are all good theme ideas, and someone suggested "I Hear Bells" from M&S's STARTING HERE STARTING NOW and I was thinking if that worked, if bells was a theme for some reason that worked, then "Ring Them Bells" by Kander & Ebb would do, too. Anything else come to mind? Thanks in advance. | |

| The only song about the day itself that I know of. It's a bittersweet beauty, one that leaves a haunting impact. | |

| Larry Grossman wrote the score to this short-lived musical sequel to Ibsen's "A Doll's House". Libretto and lyrics by Comden & Green, direction by Hal Prince. Act 1 featured a male group singing a song titled "New Year's Eve" (and a reprise of it, too). | |

| Though not sung on New Year's Eve in the show, the character (Ilona Ritter) is making a New Year's resolution. About herself and men. And it's a great song for a belter! : ) | |

| the character (Ilona Ritter) is making a New Year's resolution. That's nowhere in the text. (And no, it's definitely not sung on New Year's Eve - it's around or on Dec 12th when this song takes place.) "I resolve, come what may / I will not be this girl one more day." She's not even waiting until New Year's eve. And as a matter of fact, within the next 2 weeks, even before Xmas, she will meet a certain optometrist...;-) | |

| That's nowhere in the text. It's implied by the season of the year, December, which is when people make New Year's resolutions. The song, by itself, would still be appropriate for New Year's even if the show took place in May. | |

| Not sure if anyone's mentioned this below, but the optimal one would be "Here's to Us" from LITTLE ME. IIRC it's actually sung at a New Year's Eve party in the show. | |

| "Where Are the Snows?" from I Do! I Do! Although the lyric does not mention New Year's Eve, in the show the song is sung on New Year's Eve, and the passing of time is central to the lyric. You might also look at the title song of another Jones and Schmidt show, Celebration. The show is set on New Year's Eve, although the lyric for the song seems more specific to the winter solstice. Also, "Here's to Us" from Little Me. If you're looking at Starting Here, Starting Now, why not "A New Life Coming"? | |

Indeed, the show is odd that way (Well, it's just an odd show, period, though I do like it a lot). There's even a Saturnalia celebration toward the end, and yet the show is clearly meant to be taking place on New Year's Eve. | |

| How's about simply substituting "New Year's Eve" for "Christmas" in the song, "Lovers on Christmas Eve" (I LOVE MY WIFE)? Works for me. | |

| Though not specifically about New Year's, ONW has a great message of trying new things, taking some risks, and setting a new course in life, all things the changing of a year seems to prompt and nudge us to do. Plus it's my favorite song from the show, and what I consider the show's "I Wish" song. Patrick doesn't specifically wish for anything, but it's the song that dramatically changes his arc and sets his new course. | |

| How about "The Happy New Year Blues," an Irving Berlin tune intended for one of his Music Box Revues (but never used at the time) ? This song was introduced to a whole new generation on Varese Sarabande's "A Broadway Christmas" CD. And, of course, there's "New Year's Eve" from "A Doll's Life," with music by Larry Grossman. | |

| And, although it's a metaphor about the sparks of romance, how about the great song "Fireworks" from the Jule Styne/ Comden and Green musical , "Do Re Mi" ? | |
