| are you going to pay for them? I'm sure if you want to endow their hiring of understudies they will be happy to hire them and pay to have them rehearsed and ready before the first preview. | |

| Ms/Mr. Hog, people get disappointed including the other actors when they can't perform. I'm sure there are financial considerations, but they are also losing income when they cancel performance. So get away from your imperial trough. | |

| the occupant of the imperial throne, or trough if you prefer, is the almighty dollar. If you've ever stared at length at the financial statements of companies like CSC as I have, you'd understand that it is a miracle that they exist. You are right there are financial considerations, but people who devote their lives to keeping small NFPs afloat know a thing or two about the tradeoff between understudies and the possibility of canceling a performance. There is only one way to avoid this problem and that is to have a few extra fat cats floating around. I was inviting you to be one. | |

| But it's a valid point and a very real consideration. Until the income they lose exceeds the savings they get by not having understudies, nothing is going to change. Or option 2, AEA changes its rules so that understudies are required for shorter runs like at CSC (in which case they'll probably start programming only plays with very small casts so as to spend less than they would have with current size casts + understudies). | |

| Understudies are not usually hired for off-Broadway until the show starts previews. At least, they are not under contract until then. So they would have been out of luck in this instance, anyway. | |
