Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 at the A.R.T.

Unlike anything I've ever seen. This has big potential to be the "Hamilton" of the 2016-17 season when it transfers to NYC. However, there is one really big "IF." It's got to be in a small, intimate theater -- Circle in the Square would be perfect if "Fun Home" leaves by the end of the summer. Otherwise, unless they re-imagine the set -- which I hope they do not -- it has to be at a theater that is just one level. A balcony would not work since nobody would be able to see what's happening. I can't think of any other theaters that would work.
From the U Tube videos -- the set at the ART looks the same as the 2013 version. How to describe the set. -- think of how they turned Studio 54 into the Kit Kat Klub for Cabaret but more -- much more. Every inch of the theater (even the lobby) is part of the set. The stage is the entire theater. The stage has seating, tables, stools etc. Even the normal orchestra seats have small tables with lamps and there are platforms throughout for the actors. The actors are everywhere. Unlike Hamilton, where I had the worst seat imaginable -- I lucked out and had one the best possible seats at a table on the stage. At one point I was served a pierogi -- another a shot of vodka. It was as if I were in the actual show. I loved it! I really enjoyed being just inches from the actors.

When it opens in September with Josh Groban -- Phillipa Soo should play Natasha (the role she created) since her contract with Hamilton will probably be finished by that point. With a probable Tony nomination (maybe a win, but a really tight field this season) -- the show would have a good selling point of star-power.

This one is really special. I just hope they do a good transfer and don't screw it up. I continue to be amazed at what the A.R.T. continues to do these days. The photos online don't do it justice. This is one you just have to experience. A truly memorable theater experience.
