It’s not just about her being way too old to play Norma (which she is.)

This property - beloved as it is by some fans (and count me among them) - has never made money and doesn’t have financial prospects. She and ALW can announce that they’re making it, even announce a director (as they did in 2019) or that they’re doing it with Paramount (which they also did) but without committed funds from an investor, these updates and announcements are all meaningless.

At any given time, making a movie starring an elderly female lead (who’s last commercial hit was in the 90s) in a genre that is tough to crack (artistically and commercially), and particularly based an a IP that is known to be one of the biggest money-losers in Broadway history, is an almost-impossible task. But now, when the movie business is on life support (and streamers are no longer willing to throw money blindly on projects that wouldn’t be greenlit for a theatrical run,) there is no any conceivable way this movie will be made. And it was an unlikely project 5 and 10 years ago to begin with.

So, don’t mind these periodical headlines, especially when they’re merely an answer to a reporter’s question. Everyone needs a clickbait now and then… but they’re meaningless.
