Exactly. Where I lived (western suburbs of Chicago) our villages and Catholic schools were segregated (all white) but our public schools were integrated. The gangs (in the 50's and 60's) -- Greasers and Jocks -- were all white.

The black guys had their own groups and generally did not mix with white guys unless they played on a high school sports team (usually basketball). In the years I was in high school ('62 -- '66), no black guy was ever on the baseball team, but a couple of black kids did play football.

Of course, our high school basketball ball team was dominated by black kids, but no black guy was ever a Jock when I was in high school. However, that began to change in '67 when LT High School won the Illinois State Basketball championship.
